Face Work and Deference -2

Deference

Has to do social interaction where clear power and hierarchy

1. Is type of status ritual, kind of ceremonial rules
2. part of activities at work such as meeting
3. function as a symbolic means
4. to tell person something about himself
5. positive message that confirm relationship of actor and recipient

Behaviours work of deference
• Must be obtained from others
• Honorific and politely toned
• Actor gives recipient the benefit of doubts
• Attest to ideal guidelines

How does deference been performed?

By showing Avoidance ritual or presentational ritual.

Avoidance ritual:
• Forms of deference which leads the actor to keep at a distance from the recipient
(Commonly, avoidance personal space, personal name, or sensitive topics)

Presentational ritual:
• Actors make specific attestations to recipients about how he regards them by using, salutation, invitation, compliment and minor service.

When expectation is not met:
Supposed recipient fails to receive anticipated act of deference or actor gives deference in bad grace. It is a sign that challenging power.

In summery, face work is very common human behaviour in social interaction, especially in complex social organization, where intensity of social interaction is compulsory and there is a pattern of hierarchy and power to consider.
